The gladiatorial shows were displayed as a means of social control. They were demonstrations of power and meanwhile a great example for citizens who refused to live according to moral and ethical values of their society.

Roman gladiators

Were usually slaves, prisoners of war or sentenced to death crooks. In some cases we can see some women gladiators. A variety of people attended the fights as well as the Emperor. The shows usually opened with wild animals raging against gladiators. There were several contests during the day and when the arena was full with blood the sand was replaced by a new layer and the show went on. However, objections from the Christian church led to the abolition of gladiatorial shows in about AD400.
